Our Story

Smart, innovative, and imaginative.

SmartEquip was launched in 2000 by a group of industry visionaries who recognized the inefficiencies related to maintaining a fleet of complex equipment, supplied by a large number of different manufacturers and their dealers.

Today, manufacturers of over 350 brands of equipment are using the Network to decrease their customers’ cost of owning and operating machinery, while improving the quality of dealer and end user support, at reduced costs.

Dealers are using the Network to look for a way of improving efficiencies, in interfacing with both manufactures and customers, while offering superior customer support at lower costs.

And...equipment fleet owners across over 7,000 machine locations are reducing the cost of equipment maintenance, repair, and service, while significantly increasing equipment uptime and its financial utilization.

Some highlights of our history
Alex Schuessler, a co-founder of Caterpillar Rental Services Network (later renamed Script International) and a former Harvard-trained, professor at NYU founds SmartEquip as its first CEO. In stealth mode, the Company builds a fully-functional proof-of-concept.
2001 to 2003
JLG, Mi-T-M, and Multiquip power their websites with SmartEquip technology and are preparing to support pilot programs with large fleet owners.
2003 to 2005
United Rentals and NationsRent launch highly successful pilot programs. Participating manufacturers for the first time deliver highly customized, serial-number specific equipment support information directly into the workflow of their customers’ service and parts personnel. The pilot fleets report significant reductions in equipment support cost and time, and manufacturers and their dealers report decreased customer support costs.
Parts procurement automation is launched and more than two dozen manufacturers are on the Network. Schuessler is named by Rental Equipment Register as one of the “Top 10 People who are impacting the Rental Industry”.
2006 to 2013
Both pilot programs go commercial, and Volvo Rents, Sunbelt Rentals, Hertz Equipment Rental, RSC, and Neff join the Network. The first CAT Rental Store goes live, and Oldcastle Materials is the first contractor fleet to join.
Bryan Rich, former Chairman of NationsRent joins SmartEquip as its Chairman and CEO. Alex Schuessler launches and becomes President of the Company’s International Group and joins the Technology Committee of the European Rental Association (ERA). Fernando Pinera joins the Company as its COO.
SmartEquip transacts its first $1 billion in parts. More than 100 suppliers are now live on the Network.
2013 to 2015
Sunstate Equipment joins the Network, and Netherlands-based Boels Rental is the first large European fleet to go live with the Company’s International Group. Approximately 200 equipment brands are active participants on the Network worldwide, with an additional 400 suppliers receiving orders from within the fleet-based “Vendor Portal” solution.
Industry veteran Ron Piccolo joins the Company as SVP of Sales and Marketing, and technology veteran Daniel Eskenazi joins as SVP of Engineering.
SmartEquip expands its services to mid-size rental companies on a Software as a Service (SaaS) basis and signs up the first ten fleets. The Company enters into strategic partnership agreements with the first half dozen rental management system suppliers who can now provide and support SmartEquip Network services to their own customers.
